Zimbabwe Robotics Team Scoops Gold Medal At Robotics World Olympics

Zimbabwe may be experiencing the worst of economic and political disasters but their Robotics team just gave Zimbabweans something to smile about.

The team won gold at the recently held Robotics World Olympics. The competition was held in Ghana. The USA team won silver.

The Pan African Robotics competition had the USA as a special invitee. The theme for the competition was 'THE MAKING OF AFRICAN SMART CITIES.' Teams were supposed to come up with a robot, and in order to bring this to completion, the teams were given robot kits to build the robots from.

The robot would then be programmed by programmers using recommended software. After being programmed, the robots would then be given a task referred to as the mission.

The Zimbabwe team that won was Tynwald High School from the country's capital, Harare. Teams were divided into TECH (11-15 years) and STARS (16-18 years).

After collecting more points than anyone else, the Tynwald TECH progressed to the finals where they eventually emerged as the champions.

The main goal behind this competition is to push young students to develop innovative ideas for their cities using Science and Technology. Innovative ideas are needed for the "planning, design, management and transformation of future African Cities."

The positive development was reported first by Technology Zimbabwe.
