This is not the first time Mugo Wa Wairimu is making the headlines, and for the wrong reasons it is. He is a doctor and operates what police officials say is an “illegal Clinic” in Githurai 44, Nairobi, Kenya.
He has been charged with various offenses in the past, notable among them is the offense presented before a court of law in 2015 accusing him of sedating and raping a woman on November 1, 2014.
The doctor denied all charges and was later released after he met the conditions of providing a Sh2 million bond and a surety in like sum.
Going by the recent turn of events, the doctor seems to have given the law enforcement officers a reason to doubt his sincerity and pronounce him guilty because he was on the run for two weeks after a National Television investigative documentary revealed that he has continued to sedate and assault female patients sexually in his clinic even after the court case in 2015.
The police opened up an investigation on the matter and were on the lookout for two weeks during which Mugo Wa Wairimu went into hiding. He was later arrested at his cousin’s house in Gachie, Kiambu County, where he had gone to seek refuge after the police got information from some members of his staff who were arrested.
"He is in custody. He will be taken to court tomorrow," Flying Squad Boss, Musa Yego told reporters.
"Police must establish the allegations leveled against him. Whatever was aired can only help as a lead.
"He never used to spend time or the night in one place. He would be in one point and by the time we arrived, he had moved somewhere else,” detectives were quoted as telling reporters.
It was gathered that Mugo Wa Wairimu was able to evade police arrest due to the fact that he used over 15 different SIM cards, which continued to frustrate leads and complicated the manhunt for him before he was eventually arrested.
In the investigative piece by National Television (NTV), Wairimu is seen giving a diagnosis seemingly drunk, before proceeding to request Sh800 for drugs that cost only Sh40.
The doctor who was trained as a Nurse, doesn’t even belong to the Nursing Council and is posing as a Gynecologist, was also filmed collecting Sh23,000 from a woman whose daughter had just procured an abortion in the pretext that she was receiving treatment for a stomach upset.
