Midlands State University from Zimbabwe Crowned Law World Champions

The ninth Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot competition were held in Switzerland last week and Midlands State University (MSU) emerged the victors.

The competitions were held on July 18-21 2017 in Geneva, Switzerland, and saw the MSU team of Brian Tatenda Madziba (a final year student) and Conrad Melusi Clinton Nyathi (a fourth year student) battling it out with the world's finest universities that included Yale and Oxford and conquering them too.

Oozing a lot of elation, MSU had this to say in the statement they issued, "Competing against some of the best law schools globally, that included Oxford University and Yale Law School from the United States of America, the Midlands State University moot team finished with an average score of 89%, which was far ahead of some of the planet’s best law schools to finish as number one in the category.  This means, for the 2017 edition of the competition, Midlands State University are the world champions in this category. This is a great achievement, which no law school in Zimbabwe has ever achieved in the global arena."

In the heads of argument category, MSU came first followed by Yale Law School, with the Czech Republic’s Charles University coming third while Malawi’s Chancellor College at the University of Malawi and India Jamia Millia Islamia were in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The remarkable achievement of MSU shows how much they have matured and grown in the legal fraternity thus making waves not only in Zimbabwe but in Africa and the rest of the world. The have shown their capabilities in producing competent law students who are changing the legal landscape of the country and the continent.

The success is a milestone that ought to be celebrated a lot, a success that has to reverberate on the continent.
