Naked Dancing in a Transparent Bus in Lagos Sparks Condemnation

Many Nigerians continue to voice their displeasure by supporting the Lagos state government's decision to fish out brains behind the Lekki public naked dance, saying the show negates the beauty of Nigerian culture and way of life.

In a world gradually embracing the nude culture, can this fight be eternally sustainable?

An official with the state, Otunba Segun Runsewe  described the Lekki public show as unacceptable and an embarrassment.

Motorists and passers-by had spotted a transparent bus along the affluent Lekki area of the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria. Popular musician, Tekno had noted that it shouldn't have any negativity attached, however regardless of the motive, many seem not to be buying it. Considering the conservative African culture, which prides itself with human dignity, it will ultimately seem that such actions are dehumanizing and demeaning to womanhood.

The NCAC boss noted that the Lekki debacle "must be used as an example to officially clamp down on promoters and influencers of strange entertainment from the pit of hell, adding that Nigeria will never succumb to imported cultural pastime or to blackmail, tailored to destroy centuries old and rich Nigerian culture."

“This dizzying madness can’t and would not be allowed to turn Nigeria to destination for sex and illegal drugs tourism. Enough is enough, and for God sake, where is this coming from?”

Female sexuality and a new cultural awareness from feminists stand point is also confusing on issues such as this (feminism, by its scope is divisive and disunited). While some feminists believe that nudity and dancing nakedly only showcases a woman as a tool for pleasure to appeal to the senses of the opposite sex.

This position on beauty posits that women are not to be regarded as 'things' and there's more to the female than her body. On the other hand, another feminist school of thought is based on the opinion that the power of choice is paramount. According to this line of thought, the woman's body is personal and every woman can decide what to do with it.

Western influence on African culture no doubt, is subsuming and as Africans continue to copy several aspects of western culture, the continent is torn in between two ideologies - the liberal African narrative and its conservative form.

Many are urging the government to check the open rage and rape against African culture with possible consequences of the unimaginable.

“... we love and respect our mothers and sisters, women in general and therefore will not condone deliberate acts or actions that would betray the values of our culture and make our heroes past to turn angrily in their graves)”, Mr Runsewe concluded.
