Young Nigerian Inventor, Samuel Oteke, Builds Affordable Tech Device For African Movie Producers

Samuel Oteke has proven yet again that Africa's youthful population is its goldmine. He builds all kinds of tech that can be used in different fields. This time around he's gotten an answer for movie producers who can't afford expensive film-making equipments.

Oteke who is a film-maker himself, said his tech would be useful to African film-makers who are "unable to afford high-end equipment for their movies."

He builds camera sliders, dollies, robotics using high-end manufacturing equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutters.

"I designed a motion control systems for cinematography and film making. This system could control the pan and tilt movement of a camera with a joystick handheld unit wirelessly.

I also designed a slide function adapter for the unit to control the sliding motion. All of these are achieved with dc and Stepper motors, micro controllers (arduino) and h bridges," Samuel stated on his blog.

He was among 50 candidates who were invited to pitch to a panel sponsored by General Electric. The panel selected the final participants based on who they think is more likely to start a scalable advanced manufacturing company. Less than three years later, Samuel hasn't disappointed. 

A medium range pro cine camera, a Red Epic, prime lens package, matte box, filters, follow focus, batteries, accessories, media and tripod will run you anywhere from $1000-$2500 per day rental and require close to $100,000 insurance.

The young man explained that he would like to use his platform to let young people know that technology goes beyond laptops and mobile apps.
