Zimbabwe Economic Blues: Female University Students Recorded Jumping into Bus Through the Window

Table of Contents

With an air of uncertainty clouding Zimbabwe, things continue to take a downturn as the economy is sinking deeper. There has been a video doing rounds on social media of University of Zimbabwe students climbing into the bus through the windows in what typifies the dire public transport situation in Zimbabwe.

The video shows a lot of students trying to get into the bus at the same time, with some getting in through the windows. The fuel crisis in Zimbabwe has caused public transport fares to skyrocket. The government has stepped in by providing buses from Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO), but this has not solves anything. ZUPCO is a state-owned company.

There were reports flying around that the price of petrol and diesel had shot to nearly ZWL$8 from ZWL$4,97 and ZWL$4,87, respectively. The government has been quick to shoot down these reports, saying fuel prices must not be increased arbitrarily.

The crisis in Zimbabwe is far from being over, with the leaders seemingly being clueless on how to make things right. Most of the basic commodities are fast getting out of the reach of many citizens as prices keep rising.

There are talks underway to review the fuel prices. The Energy minister, Fortune Chasi, said that any change of fuel prices must only happen if consultations have been undertaken since most of the citizens are earning RTGS dollars. He dissuaded fuel dealers from suddenly increasing fuel prices and demanding hard currency.

As things continue to go down south, is there any reprieve for the ordinary citizen? The video doing rounds is clear indication of how the sytsem is stripping away people's dignity.
