Reasons behind the increase in Drug Addiction in Africa

Introduction:

Drug addiction is a global issue, and every county is facing this threat. It is becoming hazardous for society and the people living in it. It’s a very serious threat that the whole world is facing, and every government is trying to eradicate it.

Although cannabis is widely used in most African countries. The Governments are trying to cope-up with these problems. Still, due to a lack of resources and the unavailability of trained staff, they can’t properly eliminate it. The problem of drug addiction is now drawing the world’s attention, and developed countries show interest in its eradication. As they’re aware that sooner or later, it’ll also affect their economic and social progress.

Some types of drugs that people abuse are:

• Alcohol

• Cannabis

• Marijuana

• LSD

• Heroin

• Cocaine

• Leaves of Khat

• Kratom

However, there are many reasons for the increasing trend of drug abuse in Africa. Some of these reasons are:

Lack of Formal & Informal System for Drug Abuses:

They don’t have any formal institutions in African countries which contribute to controlling drug addiction. There is no proper system or program that can throw light on drugs and its rising trend in Africa. People are becoming addicted to drugs on a large-scale. But there are no laws or regulatory authorities that can play their role in controlling it.

There should be a formal and informal system for controlling these problems. Families, schools, churches, and a healthy environment can significantly reduce drug abuse. There’s a dire need to educate the public and give them a healthy and recreational environment to take part in healthy activities. The formal and informal system has to become much stronger in controlling and monitoring the abuse of drugs and its addiction within the region.

The deficit of Funds and Shortage of Experienced Staff:

Abolishing drug addiction is becoming difficult due to the lack of sufficient resources and the unavailability of funds. Consequently, African countries are becoming one of the biggest users and suppliers of drugs in the world. The children are getting addicted to drugs, and young people are also adopting them for enjoyment. Drugs are extensively available in the market, and everyone can easily buy drugs and seductive strains like gold Bali kratom. People use it for boosting energy and for eliminating their pain as they create a feeling of euphoria.

In some African countries, chewing the leaves of khat is a normal social habit, as it stimulates the nervous system. But in 1980, its use spread in all of Somalia, and Khat chewing became one of the primary reasons for drug addiction. The government established laws and preventive measures to stop the spread of khat addiction. They even prohibited the use and cultivation of khat. Although Khat cultivation was one of the major sources of income for people, it wasn’t a simple task to handle all these problems. After the ban of khat, unemployment increased in those areas as the majority of people were involved in the cultivation and trade of khat.

However, to cope with all these issues, the nation and the government have to understand all the problems and appreciate the efforts for controlling drug addiction.

Getting away from problems and relieving tension

Another reason for the increasing use of drugs in Africa is poverty. In poor and underdeveloped countries, people have to face many financial and social problems. They don’t have sufficient resources and means for a comfortable and luxurious life. They desire to get away from their problems and tensions. For this reason, they become habitual of drugs. As a result, many people try drugs as they help them forget their worldly stresses. Likewise, people use green Malay kratom for its pain-relieving and seductive properties and effects.
