A masquerade, known as Danafojura pulled a fire stunt at an event attended by residents of the state at Ojude Oba Festival on August 13. Thousands of people converged in the ancient town of Ijebu Ode, Southwest Nigeria to celebrate this annual event often held a day after the Sallah festivities.
There were several display of aesthetics and the very best of African culture on the occasion. However, the emergence of Danafojura caused a stir and awe. The masquerade had traveled from the ancient town of Oyo, another ancient Kingdom in pre-colonial Africa.
Thick, dry brooms were mounted high to cover the Masquerade and was immediately set on fire. A viral video making rounds online captured moment the Masquerade whose name means "Burn alive and walk away" was set ablaze. Amazingly, he remained within the high rising flames and walked away unhurt.
Talk of Africa and magic, this is pure class. Should we really bi amused by such display of metaphysical powers for showbiz when the world needs a cure for cancer and other incurable deseases?
The translation of magical powers for the common good is a major difference between science and metaphysics. This is where Africa is lost. Where the currency of science is rigorous study and meditation, the other builds on blood to maintain potency. Awkward isn't it?
