Global Teacher Prize Winner Meets President Trump

Global Teacher Prize winner, Peter Tabichi, met US President Donald Trump in the US on Monday. Tabichi is in the US to address the UN General Assembly.

Tabichi is a Kenyan science teacher and Franciscan friar. He shot to fame in 2019 after winning the coveted 1 million dollar prize (100 million Kenyan shillings) in the Global Teacher Prize award. The award is granted to a teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession.

Tabichi, who donates 80% of his salary to support pupils in the Pwani Village and supports his students through numerous other means, beat out nine other finalists of teachers from other countries to win.

Tabichi teaches maths and physics at Keriako Mixed Day Secondary School in Nakuru County. Two of his students, Esther Amimo Anywanza and Salome Njeri, were crowned winners in the UN Sustainable Development Goal awards in May. The two girls won $2000 for developing a device for blind and deaf learners to measure length.

White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted of Tabichi, "His dedication, hard work, and belief in his student’s talent have led his poorly-resourced school in Kenya to emerge victorious after taking on the country’s best schools in national science competitions. Peter, you inspire us all! Thank you for your commitment to your students."
