Macky Sall Sworn In as President of Senegal for Second Term

Majority of African Head of States and their representatives are currently in the Senegalese city of Diamniadio to join citizens of the country to witness the swearing in their president, Macky Sall for a second tenure in office.

Macky Sall emerged as the winner of the February 24 by pooling 58% of the total votes cast. Surprisingly, although all the opposition candidates rejected the results of the elections, they said they were not going to contest it.

According to the Chief Clerk of the Constitutional Court, Ernestine Ndèye Sanka who announced the results, the president had a total of 2,555,426 representing 58.26%, Idrissa Seck got 899,556 representing 20.51%. Ousmane Sonko polled 687,523 or 15.67%, Madické Niang, 65,021 or 1.48% and El Hadji Sall also had 178,613, representing 4.07%.

Reacting to the news of his victory and decision by the opposition candidates not to contest the elections in court, the president said he was willing to lend an olive branch to the opposition and promised to be a better leader to all in his second term in office.

“I appreciate the meaning and scope of this new contract of trust. It motivates me to redouble my efforts and to do even more and better.

“I invite to a republican dialogue, all the vital forces of the nation, without exclusion, dialogue to which my predecessors, the presidents Abdou Diouf and Abdoulaye Wade, could contribute,” Sall said.

Senegal is on record to have one of Africa’s most stable democracies. It has not experienced military intervention since its independence in 1960.
