How a Roadside Bread Vendor Became the Governor's Top Aide

In an incredible story of grass to grace, a popular road side bread seller to a governor in one of the northern states of Nigeria has become the governor's top aide. Abdulmalik Saidu Maibiredi, the bread vendor appointed Senior Special Assistant on Social Media to the Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, has vowed to continue selling bread after office hours. 

The state governor, Mr Matawalle appointed Mr Maibiredi as Senior Special Assistant after he vowed to appoint people from the grassroots into his cabinet. Mr Maibiredi, 24, said he would still continue selling bread, stating he was not ashamed of his work. 

“I am still very proud of my business, and I never felt denigrated selling bread. I started selling bread since I was in primary school. “I use the proceeds of the business to pay PTA dues for myself, pay for common entrance examination, placement examination and Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). 

“I bought bicycle for myself when I was in class 4 in primary school. I never bothered to ask my parents for money to buy school uniform. 

While many Northern youths in the most populous country resort into crime, the story of Maibiredi affirms the fact that individuals can still make the right choice and do not have to succumb to negativity as a way of life. He stated that he decided to go to school through the proceeds from bread before luck smiled on him and his good conducts was visible to the governor.

“I did my NCE (National Certificate in Education) while still selling bread. I am currently going for my final year in the Federal University Gusau. That is how I became who I am today. Right now as we speak, it is bread in front of me,” Mr Maibiridi added.
