Besigye Calls for Resistance to Museveni’s Life Presidency

Former Forum for Democratic Change president and presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye has called on the public to resist the lifting of age limits and extending the MP’s term tenure that was Okayed by a majority.

The defiant Besigye known for his relentless fight to remove Museveni from office said the move amounts to abrogation of the constitution and must resist by any means.

According to a local newspaper, Besigye said opposition stands for nonviolent means of changing government. Personally, he wouldn’t mind any Ugandan choosing to use other means that are violent.

Speaking at a press conference Besigye said the will be rolling out resistance campaigns starting January 9, 2018.

“A lot of work is going to be undertaken to prepare for that. You must understand that this is protracted struggle and some people don’t realize the kind of progress this struggle has made. A lot of progress has been made; the mindset of Ugandans has changed, they now know the struggle is theirs”, he said.

Two weeks ago, Ugandan legislators passed a bill aimed at removing the age limit of 75 for presidential candidates. As bait for the lawmakers backing the unpopular age limit bill, the term of office was reviewed upwards, from five to seven years.

Although the bill also reinstated two term limits, Besigye added it would have no positive impact.

“You cannot use fraud to achieve good; we now have a worthless Constitution. Anything there is of no value because the way it is removed is the way it can be put back,” Besigye said.

He added: “Once the sanctity of the Constitution has been overthrown, provisions in there make no meaning. I think anybody would be a fool to celebrate term limits in the Constitution.”
