Egypt’s Superb 3 Kilometre Iftar Table Breaks World Record For The Longest Meal Table

On Saturday, Egypt celebrated an Iftar banquet with a table that measured more than 3 kilometres setting the world record for the longest meal table.

The event held in the desert east of Cairo was attended by nearly 7,000 people at the site for Egypt’s new administrative capital. The new administrative capital is part of the mega-projects being undertaken by the Egyptian government as it seeks to mould Egypt into an attractive investment destination following years of unrest.

A Guinness adjudicator was on hand to verify the banquet table set up to celebrate the break of the Ramadan fast.

The previous world record which was only a year old was set by the municipality of Ajman in the United Arab Emirates, with a table measuring 2,983 metres, serving 6,000 people.

The attendants shared their meal of juices, water, and food, provided by the administrative capital. An iftar “mercy” table is a cherished tradition in Muslim countries during the holy month of Ramadan where the city’s poor and unprivileged are invited to break fast freely through the assistance of fortunate citizens.

The record comes just after Egypt inaugurated the world’s widest suspension bridge running across the Nile just north of central Cairo, and considered a key link in a highway stretching from the Red Sea in the east to Egypt’s north-western Mediterranean coast. The Rod Al Farag Axis Bridge which measures 67.3 metres in width, was recently handed a certificate by Guinness World Records recently.

According to the Official Guinness Records, there are more than 90 entries for Egypt; they range from the largest underpants, to the fastest cat breed and deepest scuba dive.
