Museveni: Gaddafi Was Wrong

Museveni has said Gaddafi's one Africa dream was wrong and he never supported it. Museveni in a speech read on his behalf by army chief political commisar Brigadier Henry Masiko at a meeting in the United Kingdom said, “I did not believe in the federation of the whole of Africa that the late Muammar Gaddaffi sought because the whole continent does not have sufficient compatibilities.”

Museveni, however, acknowledged that regional integration is central to development in the continent. He said, "Since the internal market of Uganda is not enough to support our prosperity, we tell our people that our future lies in an integrated East Africa and African markets because economic integration creates a bigger market and more opportunities."

Gaddafi's Dream

Gaddafi believed the continent could be brought together and stand as one federation. After the 2010 AU summit in Uganda, he told reporters, “I am satisfied that Africa is going along its historic and right road. One day it will become similar to the United States of America.” He added, “We are approaching the formation of the African Authority, and each time we solve African problems and also move in the direction of peace and unity. We deal with problems step by step. We are continuing to do that.”

Museveni was  never a fan of the dream and was one of the many leaders who abhorred the idea. It could be a case of power and self preservation or simply the practical difficulties of uniting 54 different countries.
