In Zimbabwean politics, politicians do some of the most unbelievable things. Citizens just look on, ostensibly shocked with the acts, or in fear of defiance. Some, they just blindly fall for it. In a country where a lot is at stake, people asked themselves what could be wrong with the country as the finance minister of the country, Patrick Chinamasa, officiated a bin opening ceremony.
A bin, yes, a garbage bin. Patrick Chinamasa officially opened a bin in Rusape, a small town in eastern Zimbabwe. It was an event attended by many government ministers and other public officials. After opening a new multi-sports complex in the town, the finance minister proceeded to cut the ribbon of a new bin in Rusape. Chinamasa opened three new skip bins in a bid to "help improve waste disposal and management in Rusape".
Garbage dumping is a problem in Zimbabwe. There are some places in Zimbabwe that are only marked with garbage, at times you even get appalled. The Ministry of Health has always been implored to take action. City and municipal authorities have always been compelled to act. Citizens have always been asked to be responsible when it comes to such a topic. But well, it seems the government officials decided to take it in the literal sense.
The Town Council said in a statement that the new skip bins will help improve waste disposal and management in the town. But he was roundly criticized for this move. Because people feel that in a tough country like Zimbabwe, senior ministers must be doing other "better" things than spending time to commission bins.
Another user wrote, "Zimbabwe 's finance minister Patrick Chinamasa OFFICIALLY opening Bin remarara 😐 cutting ribbons and grinning like a fool..like he is commissioning something huge...a whole minister...Jesus!!".
Well, that's Zimbabwe. Some have gone as far as to describe this as the "silly season" (the country is holding its elections on July 30 this year).
