Selected Details About Each Company
1. Nedbank
Global rank 26. Nedbank's jump from 49th in 2025 took it past Standard Bank to the top of the African group. The bank puts weight on an inclusive culture, encourages staff to join social initiatives, and uses formal and informal recognition and rewards to keep employees. It employed about 26,100 people at the time of the 2025 ranking.
2. Standard Bank Group
Global rank 54. Standard Bank was Africa's top-ranked company in 2025 at 28th and has fallen each year since placing 18th in the 2024 ranking. It employs about 54,000 people. It remains the second-highest African company on Forbes' list.
3. Absa Group
Global rank 98. Absa has barely moved: it was 97th in 2025. It is the third-highest African company and the third South African bank in a row at the top of the African list.
4. FirstRand
Global rank 104. FirstRand owns FNB and RMB, and its position is its best on the three lists reviewed: it was 342nd in the 2024 ranking. It is the fourth South African financial group in a row to fill the top four African positions.
5. MTN Group
Global rank 133. MTN is the highest-ranked telecommunications company in Africa and the first non-bank on the list. It has risen steadily from 267th in 2024 and 166th in 2025. It operates across many African markets, including Nigeria, so its ranking reflects the whole group and not only its South African staff. It had about 19,300 employees in 2026.
6. Investec
Global rank between 133 and 277. Investec is the sixth-highest African company and the fifth financial-services group among the first six. It is the only African entry for which very little detail beyond its position was published, so its exact global rank should be verified.
7. Guaranty Trust Bank
Global rank 277. GTBank is the only company from outside South Africa in the African top 10. It brings Nigeria onto a list otherwise dominated by South African groups.
8. Sasol
Global rank between 277 and 460. Sasol is one of the few non-financial companies in the top 10, working in chemicals and raw materials. It ranked 374th in 2025 and 314th in 2024, and it employs about 28,000 people.
9. Mediclinic International
Global rank 460. Mediclinic is the only healthcare company among Africa's top 10 and one of 62 healthcare organizations on the global list. It has slipped from 418th in 2024 and 425th in 2025.
10. Sanlam
Global rank below 460. Sanlam completes the African top 10 and is the sixth financial-services company on the list. It also ranks fifth in South Africa's Top Employers Institute list for 2026 and leads its financial-services category there.
Quick Answers to Commonly Asked Questions About this Topic
What is the best company to work for in Africa?
On Forbes' 2026 list, Nedbank. On the Top Employers Institute's 2026 Africa ranking, which certifies 315 organizations in 28 countries, Vodacom Group is first, followed by JTI and Mondelēz.
Why are most of the companies South African?
Forbes only considered multinationals with more than 1,000 employees, and South Africa has the continent's largest base of established corporate groups, especially banks. The ranking also covers whole groups, so a company's position reflects its operations across several countries.
Are there Nigerian companies on the list?
Only one: GTBank, at 277th globally. MTN operates in Nigeria but is headquartered in South Africa. For Nigerian employers specifically, Jobberman publishes an annual "Best 100 Companies to Work For in Nigeria" ranking based on surveys of thousands of workers.
How does Forbes choose the winners?
Statista surveyed over 300,000 employees in more than 50 countries. They said how likely they would be to recommend their employer to family and friends and rated benefits, talent development, work environment and training. They could also rate former employers from the past two years. Forbes combined the answers with data from the previous three years, giving more weight to recent responses and to current employees.
Does the list cover all African workplaces?
No. It excludes smaller employers, state enterprises not meeting the criteria, and the large informal economy. It reflects employee perceptions of selected multinationals, not working conditions across the continent.

Methodology
This ranking lists the ten highest-ranked African-headquartered companies in Forbes' World's Best Employers 2026, published on September 29, 2026 in partnership with Statista. Forbes ranks 900 multinational companies with more than 1,000 employees across 52 countries, based on a survey of over 300,000 employees. Africa-wide positions come from published breakdowns of that global list. Exact global ranks were confirmed for seven companies (Nedbank, Standard Bank, Absa, FirstRand, MTN, GTBank and Mediclinic). For Investec, Sasol and Sanlam, exact ranks were not available, so the table shows ranges implied by the order of the African list. Earlier ranks come from published lists for 2024 and 2025. The ranking measures employee perceptions of large companies at group level, not conditions at any country office. It is not an Africa-specific survey and excludes smaller employers and the informal economy. Other certifications, including the Top Employers Institute and Best Places to Work programs, use different methods and produce different winners. Rankings can change from year to year.
