Nigerian Police Arrest Woman for Locking a Boy in Dog Kernel

The Nigeria Police Force in Lagos have arrested a woman who locked up a child in a dogs cage.

The video of a woman beating a boy and locking him up in a cage with a dog went viral on Twitter a couple of weeks ago. However, it is not clear when the footage was shot.

In the video clip a woman is seen beating a boy and stripping him with a belt. She then drags him into an empty kennel and locked him. In the video two dogs are also seen mongering in the next kennel.

The video caused outrage on social media forcing well wishers to offer rewards to anyone that could track down the woman.

Former spokesperson for Nigeria's Zone 2 Police Command, Dolapo Badmos, promised social media users that that Police were investigating the matter and they would take action.

In a post on her Twitter page on Thursday, Badmos said the suspect had been apprehended.

She said, “Last week, we got the report of a lady who beat up a lad and threw him into a dungeon of dogs.

“The domestic violence response team of the Lagos State Police Command was activated. The team went into action and the lady was arrested.

“The suspect is in custody and she will appear before the court. The boy who happens to be an orphan has been rescued and kept in a shelter provided by the Lagos State Government.”

The Lagos police command also announced that it has apprehended the suspect named Onyinye Mbadike.

In a statement on Thursday, the spokesman Bala Elkana cited that Mbadike 24, was arrested at No 7 Trimnell Street, Aguda in Lagos.

The police said: "we acted on a viral video on the social media showing the suspect torturing one Chibike EziAmaka aged10years of same address. The video also showed the suspect locking the boy up in a dog’s kennel, sharing space with dogs.

"The video was widely condemned in Nigerian. The Commissioner of Police Lagos State CP Zubairu Muazu mni ordered the Gender Unit of the Command to identify the woman in the video and face the law.

Domestic and Sexual Response Team (DSVRT) Alausa Ikeja also added that the commission in following the issue with a keen interest.

Meanwhile, the suspect has admitted that she is the one on the viral video flogging the child with a belt. However, she denied locking the boy in a cage with dogs. She confessed to having only locked the boy for a few hours in an empty dog kennel where bags are kept.

According to her police statement, the woman accused the boy of misbehaving.

Investigation revealed that the boy lost both parents and was brought to Lagos in 2012 from Anambra State by the mother of the suspect along with his two siblings.
