8-year old Gitau Munene left people in awe after he garnered 800 points and won the beginner's class category in the Jumbo Charge 4x4 Mt Elgon Challenge in Cheptais, Mt Elgon. This wasn't his first win either, he won Mt Kenya 4x4 Challenge at Charana Farm, Meru County in August this year and previously participated in the Aberdare Challenge.
Gitau started driving at 6 years old, under the watchful eye of his father who was his driving instructor. "I custom made a seat for him to enable him to see the road and at the same time drive in a safe way belted up," said his father.
Gitau practices driving from home to the shop and back, guided by his father.
"My dad tells me to be confident in driving, to always look forward and avoid looking at him while on the wheel."
The path Giatu drove in the Mt. Elgon challenge had its difficulties, including a muddy terrain. He drove a Range Rover P38 with a 4-litre engine.
"As a parent, I am so proud because my son has won. I cannot explain it but I am so proud of him. Being Mashujaa Day, I must say that he is my hero today and we shall keep on doing it until I retire from the driver's seat," said Gitau's father.
