Abiy Ahmed has continued to make headlines since assuming office on the 2nd April 2018, as the 15th Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
Surprisingly, the African leader has continued to make headlines for the right reasons.
He recently appointed a female president and a gender-balanced cabinet with women making 50% of the total number of ministers in the country.
He has also become a diplomatic emissary who has continued to promote reconciliation between countries in the horn of Africa.
One of his peace meetings led to the reconciliation of the dispute between Eritrea and its neighbours which subsequently prompted the lifting of the UN sanctions and arms embargo on Eritrea.
It was however surprising when the prime minister, despite his busy schedule, created time for a get together with Grade Six students in Ethiopia in celebration of Unity Day.
Abiy Ahmed met with 140 grade six students selected from different parts of the country to mark the 13th edition of the Nations and Nationalities day, otherwise known as Unity Day.
Photos released by the office of the prime minister showed a visibly excited and ‘free’ Abiy Ahmed engaged in discussions and jokes with the students in the Addis Ababa government office complex.
The Unity Day is celebrated each year to mark the day on which the rights and equality of the Ethiopian nations, nationalities and peoples were fully guaranteed under Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Constitution.
You will recall that this is not the first time the prime minister is hosting school children in the country.
Earlier this year, he hosted a large number of school children at his office – where he donated school supplies worth millions to the students for the school year that was about kicking off.
There is no denying that Abiy Ahmed is changing the narrative associated with African leaders, and he deserves some thumbs up – do you agree?
