A 22 year-old Ghanaian footballer has been sentenced to two years in prison by a Swedish court for beating and raping his wife.
Immediately his term in prison ends, the court said Kwame Bonsu who has lived in Sweden since 2013 will be deported.
Bonsu was a player with Swedish second division Gefte IF club until Friday when the club released him after the court found him guilty on Friday.
He will also have to pay $28,000 in compensation to his wife, who is a Swedish national.
According to the court, Bonsu first met the victim in 2014 when he was playing in the southern Swedish city of Mjolby. They fell in love and married the following year.
However, few months after the wedding, the player was transferred to the town of Gavle, located about 300km away from Mjolby. This was a major blow to his wife who wanted him to stay to continue his studies.
The wife said in the court, Bonsu rape and beatings took place in the couple's apartment one evening in November 2015 when he locked her inside.
Bonsu repeatedly denied the charges, but testimony from his wife's relatives led the court to believe the victim's version of events.
