I bet you already know, but for the tenth time let me remind you that former United States first lady, Michelle Obama has released a book titled 'Becoming'. It is a memoir which exposes the candid views, opinions and experiences of the first lady for as long as she can remember and most especially, for the eight years while she was in the White House.
The book has been inducted into the Oprah Winfrey Book Club and is number one on the Amazon Books List.
Among the many experiences Michelle Obama talked up about in her book was her first experience to Kenya, alongside Barrack Obama in 1992 before they got married.
According to her, the trip was characterized with endless troubles and inconveniences; and who would blame her considering the state of Africa as far back as 1992.
Going further to expatiate on the experience, she narrates how she and Barrack Obama struggled to move around in the city in a car owned by Barrack Obama's half sister, Auma Obama.
"Auma's sky-blue VW was so old that it often needed to be pushed in order to get the engine into gear. I'd ill-advisedly bought new white sneakers to wear on the trip, and within a day, after all the pushing we did, they'd turned reddish brown, stained with the cinnamon-hued dust of Nairobi," she said.
Considering that both of them were not married at that time, the experience would have made many ladies change their minds on marrying Barrack, not knowing that the man will one day become the president of the United Sates of America and take her to heights she never imagined.
"For every bit of awe we felt in Kenya, we were also tired, which led to quibbling, which led finally, for whatever reason, to rage. 'I'm so angry at Barack', I wrote in my journal." She recalled writing in her diary as a young girl.
"I don't think we have anything in common. My thoughts trailed off there. As a measure of my frustration, I drew a long emphatic gash across the rest of the page," she wrote in the Book.
However, she claims she enjoyed every second she spent with Barrack's relatives at the time, because despite the fact that they had challenges in the country, the 'would-be' in-laws were very nice to her.
You will recall that Obama visited Kenya on three more occasions after that; in 2006 when he was Senator for Illinois, in 2015, as the President, and just recently in July, 2018 after retiring from office.
One aspect of his visits that continues to receive criticisms is the fact that neither his wife nor daughters accompanied him on any of these visits. How bad is that?
