Nigeria's Ademola Lookman's Hat-Trick Leads Atalanta to Europa League Glory

Lookman opened the scoring with two goals in the first 26 minutes and sealed the win with a third, 15 minutes from full-time, becoming only the sixth player to score a hat-trick in a European final, a feat last achieved in 1975.

DUBLIN, IRELAND — London-born Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman scored a sensational hat-trick to secure Atalanta a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, clinching the Europa League title on Wednesday. This triumph marks just the second major trophy in Atalanta's 117-year history.

Lookman opened the scoring with two goals in the first 26 minutes and sealed the win with a third, 15 minutes from full-time, becoming only the sixth player to score a hat-trick in a European final, a feat last achieved in 1975.

“We played a fantastic game tonight. In all areas, I think from the first minute we showed our intent. We played a fantastic first half. And in the second half, we didn't rest on our laurels. We kept pushing,” Lookman said after the match.

Lookman’s performance was a masterclass in agility, balance, and precision. His stealth in the penalty area, deft footwork, and accurate shooting with both feet were key factors in his standout performance.

The forward's journey to this moment has been one of perseverance. After struggling to establish himself in the English Premier League, Lookman revived his career in Italy. Even Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini admitted he did not see Lookman as a pure striker when he joined the club two years ago.

Lookman attributed his success to the support from his family, the trust from Gasperini, and the tranquil life in Bergamo. “I've always had the confidence in my ability to create, to score goals, to help my teammates. In the past two years, I've been able to take my game to a new level,” he said.

Wednesday’s victory also ended Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten streak and made Atalanta the first Italian winners of the competition in 25 years. The win not only highlighted Lookman’s exceptional talent but also solidified Atalanta’s place in European football history.

As the celebrations continue, Lookman's hat-trick will be remembered as a defining moment for both the player and the club, showcasing the heights that can be reached with perseverance, support, and the right environment
