Dorothy Ghettuba, an award-winning Kenyan film producer, has been appointed by Netflix as the Manager for International Originals. The move comes as Netflix plans to commission original shows from Africa by 2019.
“Telling our African stories. Onwards and Upwards,” said Ghettuba in an Instagram post announcing her appointment.
Commissioning original shows from Africa is expected to increase demand for the platform among viewers from the region and eventually reduce the cost of access.
Ghettuba is the founder and CEO of the Nairobi-based Spielworks Media, an African production company launched in 2009. Her dream is to turn Spielworks Media into an African version of the American Universal Studios.
