President Bongo returns to Gabon today. He is returning from Morocco where he was receiving treatment for a stroke that he suffered in October 2018 while he was in Saudi Arabia. Bongo had previously been hospitalised in Saudi Arabia.
Since seeking treatment in Morocco, Bongo has returned to Gabon twice, once in January after an attempted coup and again in February, staying less than 48 hours each time.
"The president's medical stay in Morocco is for rehabilitation and convalescence,' MAP said of Bongo's stay in Morocco. Bongo has gone on to deny reports that he has recruited a clone.
Bongo has thanked Morocco's head of state, King Mohammed VI, for the "good quality of care and invaluable support" he has received while in Morocco.
Bongo took office after an election in 2009 that followed the death of his father, former president Omar Bongo, who took office in 1967.
