All social media accounts of the president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta have been deactivated.
Popularly referred to as Twitter President of Sub-Saharan Africa, Uhuru Kenyatta is the most followed leader in Sub-Saharan Africa on Twitter and his official handle @UKenyatta boasts of 3.62 million followers and has made over 12,300 tweets.
It was not long before Twitter users noticed that people were not able to follow, like or comment on President Kenyatta's social media account as they kept getting an error message that read:
"Sorry, that page doesn't exist!"
The Chief of Staff in the Office of the President, Nzioka Waita has, however, come out this morning to inform the general public that the accounts were taken down on the order of the president in order for professionals to take 'remedial measures'.He said this in a tweet that read:
"On account of unauthorized access to the official social media handles of H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta. All official social media handles for the President have been temporarily suspended to allow for the necessary remedial measures to be undertaken.
— Nzioka Waita (@NziokaWaita) March 22, 2019"
If the Chief of Staff or the president himself thought the memo will instill calm, then they were mistaken because rather than think that Twitter took down the account for non-conformity, people are coming up with a theory that sums up a possibility that the last tweet from the president's Twitter account has angered some top political figures. The tweet read:
"If you are corrupt, we will fight you. You can be my brother or my sister or my closest political ally, but if you are corrupt we will fight you."
According to speculation, it appears that the president did not directly authorize his social media managers to put up the tweet and was angered by it after it was called to his notice by top political figures.
Whether this is true or not, the Chief of Staff, Nzioka Waita did not help matters when he said is another tweet that:
"It seems the president's stand on corruption has generated all manner of reactions".
Only time will tell what really happened and we will bring you more information as they unfold.
What are your thoughts?
