It still boggles the mind that in the 21st century, there are some people who still believe in slavery. That slavery still has a space in this modern age is extremely problematic.
A couple from North Texas has been found guilty of enslaving a woman from Guinea for a whole 16 years. The federal jury in Texas found out that Mohamed Toure and Denise Cros-Toure have been forcing the woman to work for them without paying her and as such the couple is guilty of forced labour.
What lies ahead of the couple is a possible 20 years in prison, although no sentencing date has been passed yet.
Toure is the son of Ahmed Sekou Toure, the former president in Guinea.
The Texas pair is being accused of bringing in the girl from Guinea to the United States when she was 5 years-old, and then they began forcing her to work in their home without paying her.
The matter only came to light in 2016 when the girl fled from the Toure home. However, the defence lawyers said that they would appeal the verdict of this case.
