Alex Badeh, the Nigerian Chief of Defense Staff under the past administration of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was assassinated a few hours ago by unknown gunmen who attacked his vehicle and shot him at point blank range while he was returning from his farm.
Head of the Air Force Public Relations Unit, Ibikunle Daramola, shared the news on Twitter saying:
“It is with a heavy heart that I regretfully announce the unfortunate demise of former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, who died today, 18 Dec 18, from gunshot wounds sustained when his vehicle was attacked while returning from his farm along Abuja-Keffi Road.”
The current Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar has released a statement describing Badeh's death as “an irreparable loss.”
The statement reads:
“It is with a heavy heart that I regretfully announce the unfortunate demise of former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh, who died today, 18 Dec 18, from gunshot wounds sustained when his vehicle was attacked while returning from his farm along Abuja-Keffi Road.
“On behalf officers, airmen and airwomen of the Nigerian Air Force, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, commiserates with the family of the late former Chief of Defence Staff over this irreparable loss. We pray that the Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest.”
Reactions have started to pour in from different corners of the country as people are in shock over the death of the former army chief.
The death of Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh will no doubt spark political tension in a country which is already sitting on a keg of gun powder ahead of its general elections in 2019.
