The African continent is huge and contains many countries where lots of amazing destinations are found. Some of the most remarkable and exceptional ones are the World Heritage sites. These places offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage, history and lifestyle of Africa. Are you ready to enjoy a trip to these wonderful sites? Find some of them below.
Stone Town, Zanzibar
Head to the Zanzibar archipelago in Tanzania and get the chance to visit Stone Town! It is found on the main island of Unguja which is also known as Zanzibar. This trade centre takes you to the 19th century with its winding lanes, minarets, carved doors and the House of Wonders which is a former sultan’s palace.
This coastal site has not gone through much changes over the last 200 years. So, if you are looking for authenticity, it is the perfect destination. It is a beautiful, bustling place where you can meet your friends and go on a tour to visit historic buildings and unique Arab houses. The doorways which are full of carvings do not go unnoticed! They are the wonderful creations of skilled craftsmen. Don’t miss the chance to see the birth house of Freddie Mercury during your visit! Want to relax? Simply head to one of the fine beaches along the coast, such as the Nakupenda Beach for a great time.
Get the chance to see another aspect of Africa’s rich heritage on Stampede Slot at Kitty Bingo! Old Towns of Djenné, Mali
Are you a fan of exceptional architecture? A visit to the Old Towns of Djenné is then a must! Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1988, it is an urban commune found in the Inland Niger Delta region of Central Mali. As the name suggests, these towns exist since 250 B.C. A total of 4 such towns are awaiting you! They are completely built using river mud. So, you can imagine their unique architecture.
The history of Djenné is linked to that of Timbuktu. From the 15th to the 17th centuries, most of the trans-Saharan trade of gold, salt or slaves moving in and out of Timbuktu had to pass through Djenné. One of the sites is the Great Mosque built in 1907. Find houses with the same architectural style, such as that of the Maiga family in the Algasba district, which is an old building with a Toucouleur-style entrance porch. Among other attractions, find the tomb of Tapama Djenepo and the ruins of the Djenné-Jéno settlement. Plus, don’t miss the Monday market to discover the lifestyle of this great destination!
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda
You must have heard that the African wildlife is quite rich. Grab the chance to discover it at the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Southwest Uganda. Get ready to see a diverse and isolated forest with hundreds of species of ferns and trees. It is the best place to be if you are looking for an adventure! That’s because its terrain is difficult to explore as it mainly consists of slippery valleys and steep ridges.
Do you know what is special about this park? It is home to half of the Mountain Gorilla population in the world. If you want to catch a glimpse of these big apes, you can go on a gorilla trekking expedition which allows you to observe them. Apart from gorillas, lovely butterflies and birds reside in these dense forests.
Such exceptional World Heritage sites in Africa invite you for a great adventure while making you feel at home during your trip!
