It is a debate for the ages. W24's dating columnnist, Dorothy Black says, "I think everyone needs to calm down.In the 1800s we would’ve been considered ‘digisexuals’ for our use and integration of sex toys." The definition of digisexuals according to W24 would be "people whose primary sexual identity comes with technology". It is a scary thought but it is the impending reality. Sex is undergoing its most intense revolution since it became a largely monogamous activity. Sex robots are coming and the world is not ready (save for the thousands of men buying sex dolls all over the world).
Zambia has been very candid about its stance: No to sex dolls. The Zambian Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs said, "Being a Christian nation, obviously we are anchored in Christian principles and one of the values is morality and ethics." However, there is no consensus in the country. Sean Tembo the Patriots for Economic Progress (PEP) leader says, "There is no law that bans the importation or use of sex dolls and there is no law that criminalizes masturbation. The use of sex dolls will be in private, in one's bedroom and not in a public place."
Importation of the sexbots is also illegal in Zimbabwe and Botswana among other countries but in South Africa, the industry is fast becoming a goldmine.
The issue lies in the implications of allowing these dolls. Take for example Frigid Farrah, a sexbot which resists intercourse in simulation of women resisting being raped. You basically have to rape Farrah to have sex with it. It is absolutely disturbing that rape could be commercialized in this manner but that is just a part of it. There are also child sex dolls for pedophiles and one wonders why the world is so keen to help drag divergent sexual urges into the mainstream. The West is already grappling with the question of child sex dolls especially in the context of its overemphasis on freedoms and rights of the individuals.
Some claim such dolls help deter the real-life fulfillment of pedophilic urges but Republican Representative Dan Donovan says, "It is absurd to argue that permitting sexual abuse against a realistic portrayal of a child somehow stops pedophiles from viewing real children as sexual outlets for their sick desires." In fact, the good politician has even introduced a bill - the Curbing Realistic Exploitative Electronic Pedophilic Robots, otherwise known as the CREEPER Act in the American Congress to deal with child sexbots once and for all.
Is Africa ready for these tough confrontations with its own dark sexual underworld? Only time will tell.
