The Wedding Party 2 is definitely a popular culture victory for Nigerian cinema. Forget the bad reviews from journalists, I mean, what do they know? Let the numbers speak for themselves! On Boxing Day, this wonderful film took the battle to Hollywood by crushing Pitch Perfect, Ferdinand, Paddington 2, Jumanji and (drum roll please) Star Wars in the United Kingdom on location averages. It achieved the biggest single day opening by a Nollywood film and went on to become the biggest Nollywood film in the United Kingdom yet. In Nigeria, the film had already beaten out Star Wars on its opening weekend grossing around $202,000. The movie is now officially the biggest Nollywood film of all time.
While there is still a long way to go, both Wedding Party films have proved the power of quality. It is not all too clear how much was put into production but the cameras are not shaky, the audio is spot on and the actors are obviously veterans. Whatever the investment, it is paying dividends. The film is now screening in cinemas in Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Guinea, Liberia and UK.
