Where would we be without our streaming platforms? They have seen us through major global upheaval and lockdown after lockdown. If you’re anything like us, you’ll have spent a fair bit of time streaming content to pass the time recently. But did you know that your platforms are capable of more than just play and pause?
Here, we go over some top streaming tips in 2021 to help you get the most out of your digital streaming services. So whether you’re team Hulu, Netflix, or Disney+, there’s something here for you.
Customize your subtitles
If old age or just general myopia has got you struggling to read subtitles, there’s no need to ditch your favorite foreign films. Instead, customize your subtitles to suit you. Most streaming services, including Netflix, allow you to change the text’s size and color. On Disney+, you can even change the font.
Activate parental controls
Share your account with junior family members? First, take control of what they can and cannot view by making them their own dedicated accounts within the family’s service. Then, lock the adult accounts with passwords and set age-appropriate viewing limits on each child’s account. For example, on Netflix, you can specify that a child can’t watch anything rated ‘7+’. Hulu and Disney+ have similar controls and rating systems.
By restricting their access to certain content, and the adults’ accounts, you can ensure your little ones aren’t viewing inappropriate material.
Download content for later
Unbeknownst to many customers, Netflix and many other leading streaming platforms allow subscribers to download select movies and series to watch offline. On Netflix, look out for the downward arrow icon, which indicates content can be downloaded for later use. Once on your device, you can watch this content wherever, regardless of if you have internet access.
Unlock global content with a VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Are you bored of all the shows on the streaming platforms in your country?
The good news is that you can mix things up and access content from around the world. When you use a VPN for Netflix, you can change the server location and hence Netflix’s content. So, for instance, if you want to connect to Australian Netflix, set your VPN to Australia, then open your Netflix account, and you’ll see Australia’s version of the platform.
Get recommendations and reviews on Netflix
Everyone knows that for reliable reviews and recommendations, you can’t go past IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. But not everyone knows that a nifty browser extension means you can have both review sites linked to your Netflix account.
Users can simply hover their mouse over a show or movie with the extensions loaded, and the IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes review scores will appear. Simple and easy.
