A young man in Mozambique has shockingly discovered that even the death of his bride will not help him escape paying the customary bride price.
The young man from the southern province of Inhambane was asked to pay traditional bride price for his wife who died due to complications during childbirth.
Family and relatives of the dead woman accused the man of failing to fulfill his obligations of meeting up with the woman’s family for introductions and formalities before her tragic death.
According to reports, the relatives of the dead woman forced the young man to buy clothes and shoes for his dead wife, pay more than $800 and hold a symbolic wedding ceremony.
He was told he won’t be able to bury his wife if he didn’t meet these conditions.
According to the brother of the young man, the family could only rise $178. They had to sign a pledge promising to pay the remaining amount on the wedding date on 15th December.
The family of man agreed to the terms but condemned the practice.
In Mozambique, this practice is common among some ethnic groups and the repercussions of not going through the marriage formalities are always huge.
