A police officer and at least five attackers were killed in Wednesday’s raid on the main prison in the capital, Kinshasa, officials have said.
According to the government of Democratic of Congo, supporters of jailed sect leader Ne Muanda Nsemi attacked and freed him from prison.
The Bundu Dia Kongo movement has however denied any involvement in the attack claiming its members were unaware of Mr. Nsemi's whereabouts.
BBC reports that local media say up to 100 people may have died in the raid while thousands of prisoners may have been able to escape from the prison. No one has confirmed the figures at this moment.
