Twelve seasons have passed since Liverpool and Manchester United finished together in the top two places in the Premier League. They are now back at the highest seats in English football, which means that Sunday’s clash is probably the biggest game of the season! Premier Bet have delivered their guide to the action at Anfield so that you can make an Extreme Bet.
- Liverpool look strong at home
It was 2009 when these sides last met at the top of the table. Steven Gerrard inspired Liverpool to a famous 4-1 win at Old Trafford, although it was Sir Alex Ferguson’s side that were crowned champions that season. Recent meetings have not gone United’s way, either. They have not beaten Jurgen Klopp’s men for almost three years, while the hosts have won each of the past two meetings at Anfield. In fact, it was their 3-1 win there in 2018 that saw Jose Mourinho sacked and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. If the Norwegian manager and his side are to end that run on Sunday, they will have to be at their best.
Liverpool last lost a league game on home turf in April 2017 – a 67-game unbeaten run. They have won 32 of their last 34 games at Anfield in the Premier League, and have scored 21 goals in 8 games there this season. Taking this into consideration, a home win looks likely.
However, they are on a poor run at the moment. The reigning champions have not won any of their last three league matches for the first time since May 2018. More worrying still, they have scored just once in that time. Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, who have 178 Premier League goals between them in their careers, have both proven that they are among the best players in the world. Fortunately, they will have the benefit of a long period of rest before the derby.
- United on the rise
In contrast, Manchester United will have just five days between their game at Burnley and Sunday’s match. Then again, it might be that Solskjaer wants to keep playing while his side’s confidence is high. They were the in-form team in the Premier League in the final two months of 2020 and, despite their elimination by Manchester City in the EFL Cup semi-finals last week, this will be their best opportunity to win at Anfield since they last did so five years ago.
Strangely, despite the attacking talent on display this fixture rarely produces many goals; seven of the last ten league meetings have featured fewer than three goals. With both sides fearing defeat, might this be a more cautious game than we expect?
