It’s been 12 years since Liverpool and Manchester United both finished in the Premier League‘s top two places. Considering that historically these are England’s two biggest clubs, this feels like an age. However, this Sunday they meet at Anfield as title contenders, and whichever side takes glory here could lift the trophy in May. Premier Bet look ahead to the derby and the options for a soccer bet.
Are Liverpool the team to add to your soccer bet?
Recent meetings between these sides have gone Liverpool’s way. Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten against their old rivals since March 2018 and have won the last two encounters at Anfield. Their 3-1 victory against the Red Devils in December 2018 led to Jose Mourinho’s dismissal at the Old Trafford club, with former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer anointed his successor. Will the Norwegian manager fare better on Sunday?
The hosts haven’t lost a league game at Anfield since April 2017 – 67 games ago. They have won 32 of their last 34 games and have scored 21 goals in their eight league fixtures there this season. Is another win likely?
Could Manchester United get the win?
However, Klopp’s side are on their worst run in years. The reigning champions have failed to win in three consecutive Premier League games for the first time since May 2018. Can Mo Salah and Sadio Mane rediscover their form in time for the derby? The duo have scored 178 Premier League goals between them, while the “Egyptian King” was on the scoresheet when the sides last met almost exactly a year ago. Klopp will be delighted that they have nine days to rest before the derby.
In contrast, Manchester United will have just five days to prepare following their game at Burnley, although Solskjaer might be pleased that his side keep playing while confidence is high. They were the in-form team in the Premier League in the final two months of 2020 and, despite their elimination by Manchester City in the EFL Cup semi-finals last week, this will be their best opportunity to win at Anfield since they last did so five years ago.
Strangely, despite the attacking talent on display this fixture rarely produces many goals; seven of the last ten league meetings have featured fewer than three goals. With both sides fearing defeat, might this be a more cautious game than we expect?
