Should the Tanzanian government toughen its stance towards corporal punishment? Watch and decide.
A video showing five trainee teachers clobbering a helpless student has gone viral and started a cyber-storm in the trend #ArrestMbeyaSecondaryTeachers. The video shows a University of Dar es Salaam University College of Education and Mwalimu Nyerere Education College students in practical training beating up a student for allegedly failing to write an English test.
The Tanzanian Education minister has expelled the trainee teachers while the Home Affairs Minister Mr Mwigulu Nchemba has directed the authorities to make sure that the teachers are arrested and brought to justice. He directed the police to arrest the teachers who fled the scene soon after the assault. Tanzania has laws barring corporal punishment and this has sparked a debate on adherence to the law in the African country. Should the Tanzanian government toughen its stance towards corporal punishment? Watch and decide.
