Menaka Region, Mali - Mali's state television has reported the death of Abu Huzeifa, a senior Islamic State commander with a US bounty of $5 million on his head, during a coordinated military operation in the northern town of Indelimane, Menaka region.
The operation was a collaborative effort involving forces from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
Abu Huzeifa, also known by the nom de guerre Higgo, was a Moroccan national and a notorious figure within the Islamic State's self-proclaimed Sahel Province.
He had been implicated in numerous attacks across the Sahel region, including the deadly 2017 raid that resulted in the deaths of four American soldiers and several Nigerien troops.
The successful operation marks a significant victory for the military coalitions of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, all of which have been under military rule and have experienced severe disruptions due to jihadist insurgency.
These countries have increasingly sought the support of Russian military advisors and resources, concurrently distancing themselves from traditional Western allies, including the United States.
The elimination of Abu Huzeifa underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics in the Sahel, where countries are navigating their security policies amidst shifting alliances.
The operation also highlights the ongoing efforts by local governments to combat the pervasive threat of jihadist groups in the region.
The death of this key Islamic State figure is seen as a crucial blow to the operational capabilities of jihadists in the Sahel, potentially destabilizing their activities in the region.
It also signifies a strengthening of military cooperation among Sahel countries as they align more closely with non-Western partners to enhance their defense capabilities against insurgent threats.
