South Africa's Stars Shine in Thebe Magugu's New Lobola-Inspired Fashion Collection

Johannesburg, South Africa — Some of South Africa’s most recognizable figures have taken a step away from their usual professional roles to model in the latest fashion collection by acclaimed designer Thebe Magugu. Magugu's new capsule collection draws inspiration from the traditional Southern African custom of lobola, where the groom's family presents gifts such as money or cows to the bride's family as a symbol of commitment and readiness for marriage.

The collection, which creatively weaves elements of the lobola ceremony into its designs, was recently showcased by a diverse array of South Africa's talent.

Among those who walked the runway were Ama Qamata, known for her role in Netflix's Blood and Water, footballer Miguel Timm, veteran actor Dr. John Kani, and former public protector Prof Thuli Madonsela.

These high-profile figures brought Magugu's vision to life, celebrating a pivotal aspect of South African heritage.

In an interview with British Vogue, Magugu, who is based in Johannesburg, expressed his gratitude towards the notable individuals participating in the showcase: "I’ve reached out to some of the most extraordinary individuals in my country, whom I’m fortunate enough to call my friends, to help bring this vision to life, and I’m deeply grateful for their involvement."

This lobola-themed collection is the third installment of Magugu’s "Heritage" collection, which aims to highlight different facets of South African culture through fashion.

Since winning the prestigious Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) Prize in 2019, Magugu has gained significant international acclaim, presenting his work at Paris and London Fashion Weeks and collaborating with global brands such as Adidas and Dior.

Through his innovative designs and thoughtful engagement with cultural themes, Magugu continues to cement his reputation as a leading voice in contemporary fashion, both in South Africa and globally.
