Kenya to Boost E-Mobility with $2.2 Million Investment

Nairobi, Kenya — Kenya's state-owned power utility, Kenya Power, has announced plans to invest 302.5 million Kenyan shillings ($2.2 million; £1.5 million) in e-mobility projects over the next three years. This significant investment underscores the country's commitment to fostering sustainable transportation solutions.

The bulk of the investment will focus on expanding the infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) across the nation.

Following the launch of its second EV charging station on Monday, Kenya Power revealed ambitions to set up nine additional charging stations by the end of July. Moreover, the company aims to establish 10 more facilities annually in 2025 and 2026, significantly increasing the accessibility of EV charging services throughout Kenya.

Kenya Power’s CEO highlighted the strategic importance of these stations, noting that they will serve not only as charging points but also as data collection hubs.

This data will play a crucial role in guiding the further development of the e-mobility sector in Kenya, helping to tailor services and infrastructure to meet growing demand effectively.

In addition to enhancing charging infrastructure, Kenya Power is also taking steps to green its own operations. The company has announced plans to increase the number of electric vehicles and motorcycles in its corporate fleet, with a target to acquire 34 new electric vehicles by the end of the year.

This initiative is part of a broader national effort to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change by promoting cleaner, more sustainable modes of transportation.
